EC2 Cost Warnings Report

The EC2 Cost Warnings Report is designed to locate ways to cut your AWS costs.  It looks at your EC2 deployment and highlights items that are costing money, which may not be necessary.

Unused Elastic IPs: Shows the allocated Elastic IPs that are not associated with any EC2 instances.  Amazon imposes an hourly fee on all Elastic IP Addresses that are not associated with any running instances.

  • Domain –
  • Elastic IP Address – the address of the unused Elastic IP.
  • Estimated Cost Per Month – the estimated cost to keep the unused Elastic IP Address for 30 days.

Unused EBS Volumes: Shows the EBS Volumes that are not attached to any instances.  If a volume is not being utilized, it will still incur monthly charges for provisioned storage.

  • EBS Volume – the ID of the unused volume.
  • Region – the region where the unused volume resides.
  • Estimated Cost Per Month – the estimated cost to store the unused volumes for 30 days.

EBS Volumes Attached to Stopped EC2 Instances: Shows the EBS Volumes that are attached to instances that have been stopped, and are not running.  EC2 instances that have been stopped do not incur any charges.  However, if a stopped instance has an EBS volume attached to it, the volume will still incur monthly charges for provisioned storage.

  • EBS Volume – the ID of the attached volume.
  • Instance ID – the ID of the EC2 instance the volume is attached to.
  • Estimated Cost Per Month – the estimated cost to store the attached volume for 30 days.

Unused Elastic Load Balancers: Shows the Elastic Load Balancers that do not have any associated instances.  If a balancer is not associated with any EC2 instances, it will still incur charges each hour it is active.

  • Load Balancer -the name of the unused load balancer
  • Estimated Cost Per Month – the estimated cost to keep the load balancer active in the account for 30 days.

Top 10 EC2 Instances by Cost (including EBS storage costs): Shows the EC2 instances that are the most expensive to run.  The estimated monthly cost includes the cost of attached EBS volumes.

  • EC2 Instance -the ID of the EC2 instance.
  • Estimated Cost Per Month – the total cost, including the cost of attached EBS volumes, to run the instance for 30 days.
